A wedding guest dress has been slammed for looking like a 'garbage bag' and a 'parachute' - with shoppers especially stunned by the frock's eye-watering $1,295 price tag.

A content creator recently shared that she went to a wedding wearing the Christopher Esber Cross Vine Micro Mini Dress in black.

The controversial dress is 100 per cent silk and features a draped train over the front of the right leg, with drawstring-like features cinching the fabric at the chest and waist.

Thousands were appalled anyone would wear the dress out in public - let alone to a wedding - and revealed their shock online.

'Yeah, no,' one simply said.

The dress was part of a limited-edition release and is not longer available on the brand's official website, but some items are available to buy or rent second-hand.

'It looks like a trash bag,' an American noted.

Another said to the influencer: 'It looks like a trash bag and a parachute but some how you're almost pulling it off.'

Many were irked by the front trail, which some described as a 'leg curtain'.

'I love you but the piece in the front is agitating me,' a woman said.

'I think the dress would be cute if you just removed the thing hanging on the front. And if it was a bit longer. And for a wedding, maybe not black…' another added.

Wedding guest outfits are a hot topic of discussion, with many struggling to get the dress code correct.

General rules include not wearing white - as it is reserved for the bride - and not wearing black because it is considered morbid. The colour red is also a no-go because it supposedly signifies you have had relations with the groom.

So the 'garbage bag' dress, in addition to being unsightly, also broke the unspoken rule of not wearing black to a wedding.

Wedding guests should also aim not to 'outshine the bride' by wearing something overly attention-grabbing - such as a gold dress that led to a guest being kicked out of her friend's wedding.

Another woman recently showed up to her friend's nuptials wearing a sheer white dress that showed off her underwear.

A guest shared an image of the guest's 'inappropriate' attire which violated several wedding social conventions, such as refraining from wearing white.

The dress' asymmetrical shape and long back also made it seem like the garment had a frilly train.

Its sheer nature and thigh-high slit perfectly displayed the white bodysuit the woman had on underneath the dress.

Many bashed the outfit as 'horrible' and 'outrageous' and couldn't believe how the woman was allowed to attend the black-tie event.
